Richard F. “Dick” Cerney, age 87, of Ripon, WI, passed away on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at Prairie Place Assisted Living in Ripon. Dick was born on November 13, 1933, in Eagle River, WI, the son of Frank and Beryl (Gloyd) Cerney. He was a graduate of Ripon High School. On September 8, 1956, Dick was united in marriage to Helen Braun at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Ripon. She preceded him in death on January 25, 2014.
Dick was known for many years in Ripon as “The Family Handyman”, performing a wide variety of tasks from remodeling a bathroom, or installing a fence, to cleaning leaves out of gutters. His motto was “No job is too small” and was frequently assisted by one or more of his sons. Dick and Helen were foster parents for multiple children, and actively fostered for many, many years. He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, and was a past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Counsel 4877 in Ripon.
Survivors include his sons: Richard II (Mary) Cerney, DePere, WI, Dennis (Gale) Cerney, Iron River, MI, Kenneth (Ellen) Cerney, Merrill, WI, Edward (Lisa) Cerney, Clayton, WI, Michael (Suzanne) Cerney, Eldorado, WI, Jay (Cathy) Cerney, Fox Lake, WI, Eric (Marti) Cerney, Van Dyne, WI, Chris (Ann) Cerney, Ripon, WI, Ron Cerney, Oshkosh, WI, and Louis Cerney, Ripon, WI; sister, Bette Kahl, Markesan, WI; sisters-in-law, Judy (Robert) Curry, Decatur, IL, and Bette (James) Schauer, Green Bay, WI; 20 grandchildren;19 great-grandchildren, a great great grandchild and special friend, Arlene Thiem, Ripon, WI. He is preceded in death by his wife, Helen; his parents, Frank and Beryl Cerney; his brothers, Willard and Donald; and brother-in-law, Karl Jr Braun.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Dick will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at 11:00am at St Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Ripon, WI with Father Davies Edassery officiating. Social distancing and masks are required in the church. Interment will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Ripon, WI.
