Frederick J. Tietbohl III, age 92, of Green Lake, WI, passed away at Markesan Resident Home May 8, 2024. He was born March 25, 1932 in Williamsport, PA. He was united in marriage to Ruby A. Holyfield of Little Rock, AR on Dec. 21, 1957 in Del Rio, Texas.
Fred graduated from The South Williamsport PA Jr. Sr. High School in 1950. In June 1954 he received a BS degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from The Pennsylvania State University and was also commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He entered active duty in Jan 1955 and served as a Photo-Radar Intelligence officer with the Air Force U-2 program at Laughlin AFB, Del Rio, TX. In 1959 he was an Aerospace Munitions Officer in Korea, Japan, and Okinawa. Fred graduated from the Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell AFB, AL in 1967 and then served as Deputy Commander 408th Munitions Maintenance Squadron, Ubon Thailand. He received the Bronze Star for service during the South East Asia conflict. Fred was in Germany 1968-1972 and as a Major was Director of Munitions, 17th AF Headquarters, Ramstein Germany. From 1972 to 1975 he was the Chief, Inter Service Nuclear Weapons school at Kirtland AFB, NM. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1975 with the Meritorious Service Medal.
Fred was a 50 year member of IVY Lodge 106 F & AM Williamsport, PA and the Scottish Rite Consistory in Denver CO. He also belonged to Tau Kappa Epsilon social and Alpha Phi Omega service fraternities. He was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church in Denver and Light of Christ Lutheran Fellowship (LCMC) Church in Berlin WI. Fred was an active Amateur Radio operator and a member of the American Radio Relay League. He was engaged in genealogy and administrator of a genealogy website. He belonged to the Capt. Hendrick Aupamut, WI Chapter Natl. Society Sons of the American Revolution with proven ancestry to 5 Revolutionary War patriots. He was also a member of The Order of the Founders and Patriots of America as a lineal descendant of Capt. John Whipple who arrived in Boston MA in 1632.
Fred was a devoted son, brother, husband, loving father, grandfather and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Jon Smick of Green Lake; sister-in-law, Mary Louise Tietbohl of Harrisburg, PA; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruby A. Holyfield; His grandson Christopher Smick, as well as his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. John Tietbohl II, brother Richard, and sister Susan.
Per the wishes of Fred, cremation has taken place with no services at this time. Divine Passage Funeral Home in Ripon is serving the family. Divinepassagefunerals.com
