Bernice Hoefer Obituary

Bernice A. Hoefer, age 77, of Ripon, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 14, 2020 at St.
Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac, WI. Bernice was born on February 18, 1943 in Ogdensburg, NY,
the daughter of Oliver and Francis June (Hunter) Hunt. She graduated from Hammond Central
School in Hammond, NY in 1960. Bernice was united in marriage to Edward Gerdes in
September 1962 and they raised four children together. She then married Glenn Gonigam in
August 1980. He preceded her in death on September 30, 1988. In February 1991, she married
Donald Hoefer. He preceded her in death on December 23, 2003. Her formative years were
spent around the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands areas in upstate New York where she
developed her love for water sports and boating.


Bernice co-owned the Ace Hardware store in Princeton, WI for several years with her late husband, Glenn. She then held positions at Speed Queen and Ripon Medical Center for more than 20 years before her retirement. Bernice was an active member of Ripon Immanuel United Methodist Church. She loved the company of her many friends and family. She enjoyed
volunteering, traveling, shopping and cheering for the Green Bay Packers.


She is survived by eight children and step-children: Robin (Douglas) Noble of Gainesville, GA; Rebecca (Kevin) Woody of Marietta, GA; John (Mary) Gerdes of Chipley, FL; Matthew (Jennifer) Gerdes of Western Springs, IL; Bruce (Jill) Gonigam of Walnut, IL; Ann Rabe, of Fairfax, IA; Craig (Leslie) Gonigam of Tiskilwa, IL; and Tim (Carla) Gonigam of Walnut, IL; 21 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, one brother and husbands, Glenn Gonigam and Donald Hoefer.


A Memorial service for Bernice will be held at 12:00pm on July 10, 2020 at Immanuel United Methodist Church in Ripon with Rev Harsha Kotian officiating. Family and friends may visit at the church from 10:00am until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Froedtert Hospital Foundation in Milwaukee or Immanuel United Methodist Church in Ripon are appreciated.
